Make Your Space Look Larger
Remember your first apartment? How you walked in and with no furniture in it you might have thought it looked sooo small. It’s always amazed me that adding furniture to a spae can make it look larger. Here are some other tips to enhance your space!
Use the Ceiling as a 5th Wall
Don’t stop at painting or wallpapering just the 4 walls in your home. Instead, take a cue from Villa Belmonte by Calimia and extend your wall design onto the ceiling.
Paint the Ceiling, Doors, & Trim to Match the Walls
Create a never ending height effect by carrying your wall color up onto the ceiling as well as on the trim & doors. Boldness pays off - like in this pink and green room.
Don't Overcrowd Shelves
Give your shelves breathing room by placing only one or two objects on them.
Float Your Furniture
Rather than pushing your furniture up against a wall, float it in the center of the room to open up space around it just like in this Studio McGee design.
Make Your Furniture Pull Double Duty
This bench created by Amber Lewis Design is not only a beautiful place to rest, but features a built-in storage solution.
Declutter Regularly
The more items in a space - the smaller it’ll seem. Keep yours seemingly large by keeping clutter contained.
Use a Large Area Rug
You make think that a small space needs a small rug, but that’s not true! Use one that covers almost from wall to wall and fits your furniture securely on it. This creates the illusion of a larger space like in this A. Naber Design project.
Forgo Side Tables
Clunky, square side tables are a thing of the past. Open up space by getting rid of them (or keeping them small) like in this Brit Dot Design living room.
Let Light In
Letting the light - and the landscape - in makes it feel as if your face extends beyond your walls. Take a cue from this Portuguese seaside home and let the shine in however you can - from the windows AND the ceiling.
Hang Curtains Higher than Window
Hanging your curtains at least 6” - or up to the ceiling as in this Liz Kamarul design draws the eye up and gives the impression of a higher ceiling.and more space.
Use Bookshelves to Create Zones
Using open bookshelves not only allows light to shine through, but also helps establish zones inside a home making the space look multi-use.
Divide Your Room Into Zones
Create functional zones in a space - rather that be for working, sleeping, eating, or playing and you create the illusion of a larger area.
Get Leggy
Opt for furniture with legs such Patrick O’Neill does in his home. Legs allow light to pass through not only above the furniture, but below, making a room look bigger.
Add Mirrors
Intimate Living Interiors had the right idea with this mirror. It bounces light off the window but also reflects the outdoors creating an optical illusion of more depth and space in this entryway.
Get Items Off the Ground
Whether it be switching a floor lamp for sconces, a shelf for a wall-mounted cabinet, or a vanity for a floating vanity like in this bathroom by Crystal Sinclair; getting things off the ground gives you more floor space. The key idea being more space!
