Lazy Girl’s Guide to Keeping Whites White

I’m tired of my whites getting dingy and stained! But I don’t want to spend a lot of time or money keeping them white. I tested out how to keep my white’s pristine using household products that I know swear by.

Here are the items you should keep in your laundry basket.

1. Spare, Clean Shirt

As soon as I get home from exercising, I take off my white shirt. I’m not going to let not wanting to climb the stairs from preventing me from doing this right away, so I always keep a spare, clean shirt, in my laundry room.

A spray bottle of water & vinegar mix.

2. Spray Bottle of 1:1 Vinegar & Water Mix

I spray this on sweaty shirts as soon as I’m done wearing them.

3. 1/4 cup baking soda mixed with 1/2 cup water & a brush.

Use this paste on any deep set stains & let sit overnight.

An extra hanger.

4. Extra Hanger

If my clothes are sweaty, after a workout I’ll hang them up to prevent mold & mildew.

Here’s what to do now that you’ve got your laundry essentials assembled.

  1. Immediately remove the white garment when you’re done wearing it (and put on that spare shirt!).

  2. Spray areas that tend to yellow or discolor - armpits, collar, and cuffs with the vinegar/water solution.

  3. For any stains, spot treat my gently brushing in the baking soda paste.

  4. Let sit overnight (or longer if it’s not time for a load of white laundry). Use the hanger to the let the garment dry if it’s wet or sweaty.

  5. When you have enough whites for a load, wash according to label directions (I prefer cold water so that my clothes don’t shrink).

This formula is great for all fibers - synthetic and natural!
