How to Properly Store Outdoor Summer Items

We know we haven’t seen the last of hot, humid days, and autumn’s official start date is September 23rd, but Labor Day Weekend is when we really get excited for chilly weather! It’s the official start of college football and an acceptable time to put out our Halloween and fall decor. So here are a few items that require a thorough cleaning & proper storage as summer comes to a close. Winterizing them will ensure that they’re ready to use next year!

1. Pool Toys: Properly storing your pool toys during the winter months can significantly extend their lifespan. Here's how:

a. Clean Thoroughly: Before storing your pool toys, make sure they are clean and dry. Use a mild detergent and water to remove dirt, grime, and chlorine residue. Rinse them well and let them dry completely.

b. Deflate Inflatables: If your pool toys are inflatable, gently deflate them to reduce the risk of damage from cold temperatures. Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

c. Store Indoors: Whenever possible, store pool toys indoors. This prevents exposure to harsh winter elements, such as freezing temperatures and snow.

2. Beach Towels: Taking care of your beach towels during the off-season will ensure their softness and vibrancy remain intact. Here's what you can do:

a. Wash and Dry: Launder your beach towels according to the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid using fabric softeners as they can reduce the towels' absorbency. Dry them thoroughly before storage.

b. Fold Neatly: Fold the towels neatly to avoid wrinkles. If space permits, store them on a shelf indoors. If not, opt for airtight plastic containers in a dry area.

3. Hoses: Winterizing hoses prevents freezing, cracking, and damage that can occur when water freezes inside. Follow these steps:

a. Drain Water: Disconnect your hoses from outdoor faucets and allow all the water to drain out. Hold the hose at a downward angle to ensure complete drainage. Alternately, you can use an air compressor for fast removal of all water.

b. Store Indoors: If possible, store hoses indoors or in a heated garage to prevent freezing. If storing outside is your only option, coil the hose neatly and cover it with an insulated hose cover.

4. Patio Furniture: Properly caring for your patio furniture during the winter months preserves its appearance and extends its life. Follow these guidelines:

a. Clean Thoroughly: Clean your patio furniture cushions using a mild detergent and water. Depending on the material of the furniture itself, follow these tips from Better Homes & Gardens to sanitize. For wooden furniture, consider applying a protective sealant before winter. Dry the furniture completely to prevent mold and mildew growth.

b. Cover or Store: Cover your patio furniture with weather-resistant covers. These covers safeguard against snow, ice, and other winter elements. If possible, store lightweight furniture indoors or in a shed.

c. Elevate Furniture: If your furniture has legs, consider elevating it slightly to prevent moisture from seeping into the legs and causing damage.

Taking the time to properly winterize your pool toys, beach towels, hoses, and patio furniture can save you money and effort in the long run. By following these steps, you're ensuring that these items will be ready to use and enjoy when summer comes around again. Proper care and storage during the winter months can make a significant difference in maintaining their quality and extending their lifespan.
